21 July 2023India bans export of non-basmati white rice
Indian government has prohibited the export of non-basmati white rice with immediate effect, fromThursday, July 2023 due to late start of the seasonal monsoon rains which hurt the crop and raising fears of a production shortfall.
India is the world’s leading rice exporter, accounting for more than 40% of the global rice trading in the world as well as the second-largest producer after China. This ban could affect around 80% of India’s export volumes until further notice is lifted by Indian government.
